Carpets of vineyards cover the hillsides, broken occasionally by stately cypresses and gardens leading to farmhouses or inns. Stretching out from our home in the Tuscan hills, a patchwork of colors beckons us to explore and create images of this magical part of Italy. Our home for this visit will be the Dievole Winery in the heart of the Chianti Classico zone of Tuscany. We will be near Siena and Florence, near hill towns, agricultural markets, and Chianti wineries, yet far away from our daily lives.

Make your plans now. Our group is small enough to accomodate you this autumn in Tuscany, but enough participants have registered so that we know the workshop will be happening.

Our photography workshop will be one of four simultaneous workshops offered by Il Chiostro during autumn, including a painting and drawing workshop, a Tuscan cuisine workshop, and a fine art collage workshop. Your travel companion could enroll in another workshop while you extend your photographic skills.

As we begin our photography workshop, we'll discuss our own photographic history and goals. We are surrounded by advertisements for new camera equipment. Yet, when we put away our newest camera and file our latest images, our results still aren't what we hoped they'd be. Although we photographers must be concerned with equipment and techniques, sometimes we forget that photography is a means of self-expression, which involves one crucial element above all others: composition.

During our 10-day workshop, we stroll through small, lively villages, visit a couple of world-famous cities, and meander through the rolling Tuscan landscape. We will concentrate on making images utilizing the basic design elements of shape, color texture, pattern, and other design techniques to create images with pizzazz.

On our day trip to Florence, Barbara will show you how to create a story, using ideas and techniques she learned while on assignment for the National Geographic Society.

Whatever your photo ability, Barbara and Allen will take you to the next level. Film and digital cameras both are welcome. At the end of the trip, you will have a collection of beautifully designed images that show Tuscany as you experienced it.

During your trip you will learn:

  • Basic landscape photography techniques
  • Working with the colors and directions of light
  • How to produce images of lighted buildings at night
  • Composition design elements to produce images with impact
  • How to tell a story with your camera
  • An easy technique for composing an environmental portrait of yourself and others
  • How to create an image with the sense of place
  • How to make a selection of your images when you finish a photography session
  • Techniques to organize your final presentation

Your tour fee includes tuition; ground transportation from Siena to Divole Winery; all accommodations (double occupancy); breakfasts and dinners (with wine); winery visit and wine tasting; guided walking tour of Siena; one day excursion to Florence; pre-trip preparation to maximize your tour experience; and photographic instruction during the tour.

The course fee does not include airfare to or from Italy; local bus or train fares; most lunches; or film processing. You should plan to fly to Rome or Florence and then take the train to Siena.
